  • ANIMAL VACCINATIONS

Veterinary vaccines have had, and continue to have, a major role in protecting animal health and public health, reducing animal suffering, enabling efficient production of food animals to feed the burgeoning human population, and greatly reducing the need for antibiotics to treat food and companion animals. Animal vaccines are developed and licensed for a variety of purposes. Most are used to prevent infectious diseases. Animal Vaccines must contribute to the profitability of the producer to be widely accepted.

Mt Ossa Rural have strong partnerships with global animal health companies with a diverse portfolio of animal health medicines and vaccines designed to meet the real-world needs of veterinarians and the livestock farmers and companion animal owners they support.

If you’re looking to buy recognised, trusted and respected animal health products, then you’ll appreciate the vast range we have available. NLIS (National Livestock Identification System) tags are just one type of animal identification products we offer our customers in both electronic and visual types.

If you invest in NLIS tags for your farm animals, you can enjoy a degree of peace of mind. These tags make it convenient and easy for authorities to pinpoint and track livestock. If a farm animal has an NLIS tag, it will be trackable from birth right through to processing. If you for whatever reason have to transfer a farm animal to a different property, it will have to have an NLIS tag before you can do so.

A few things NLIS allows you to do:

    Record livestock movements

Check what livestock are on your property

See what livestock you have bought, sold and moved

If you have any questions regarding the guidelines for NLIS tags, you don’t have to look very far. The experts amongst our staff can answer any questions you may have. When it comes to dependable and comprehensive animal health advice, the professionals amongst our staff truly know what they’re talking about.

  • FUNGICIDES

Fungal plant diseases occur when conditions conducive to the survival of the fungi are present and are closely linked to the weather. Fungicides are used in many situations including to prevent or control plant diseases and maximise yield and quality in crops grown for food and for managing healthy turf and ornamental plants.

‘Contact’ or ‘protectant’ fungicides are designed to prevent fungal disease from taking hold by forming a protective layer on the outside of plants and preventing the fungus from entering and damaging plant tissue. The fungicide must come into direct contact with the fungus and will have to be re-applied to new plant tissue as the plant grows or if the product is washed off. Although they can slow or stop the development of new symptoms, many of these fungicides only prevent disease, so must be applied prior to infection as they are not highly effective after symptoms have developed.

‘Systemic’ or ‘penetrant’ fungicides are absorbed by the plant and are able to move from the site of application to other parts of the plant to protect from the inside. A fungicide may also be described as having ‘curative’ properties if it offers the ability to control disease when applied immediately post-infection or when symptoms are first observed.

The disease in question should be carefully identified before treatment to ensure the most effective outcome is achieved. Before using a fungicide to manage disease, be sure to seek advice from your local brance to ensure that you choose the most suitable and cost effective option for your situation, including information regarding crop or plant safety, any harvest or grazing withholding periods and best practice in terms of managing fungicide resistance.

  • INSECTICIDES

Australian agricultural property owners who are committed to responsible farming are always looking for ways to make their crops more resistant to disease and pest infestations. The use of insecticides is one way to manage pests that impact your crops. When choosing an insecticide its best to understand the type of target pest, the severity of infection and crop that the pest is present in so you can choose the best product for your situation.

We stock a wide range of quality insecticides for a wide range of uses, be it applied on seed for early control when crop is emerging and is most vulnerable, or for fast kill once the pest has moved into the crop to protect yields. Controlling pests fast once they have moved in to a crop, will help maintain the best return on investment. When choosing an insecticide there are many options, however, it’s important to choose the product that suits the situation best. Advice from Mt Ossa Rural is advised as they have a good knowledge of your area as well as new products on offer, these steps are critical to breaking the pest resistance cycle to ensure we always have products that are both effective and affordable.

  • HERBICIDES

Herbicides are used to control weeds in many situations including the quest for growing a food or fibre crop, managing turf or an ornamental garden, controlling woody weeds or simply to maintain a weed free amenity area.

Non-selective herbicides are usually used to manage existing weeds and are designed to kill any plants to which they are directly applied (Knockdown herbicides). Examples include products containing glyphosate, paraquat and glufosinate. Non-selective herbicides may also be used in some cases to prevent establishment of weeds by preventing germination through a residual action in the soil.

Selective herbicides target certain plant species only and may be used just prior to (Pre-emergence), or during a crop growing season (Post-emergence) to target those weeds that are likely to compete with the crop for nutrients and reduce its yield potential.

Before using a herbicide to manage weeds, be sure to seek advice from any of our branches and always read the label carefully to ensure that you choose the most suitable and cost effective option for your situation, including information regarding crop or desirable plant safety, any plant-back waiting period restrictions, stock grazing withholding periods and best practice in terms of managing herbicide resistance.
